Position Summary

The Community Response team is a critical part of ending violence in our community. The goal of this position is to ensure the safety and stability of domestic violence survivors through oversight of the Law Enforcement Specialized Unit Advocate and the Court Advocacy department. The position provides direct services, in addition to its leadership role, and it is a key liaison to the Court, Court Services, and the Legal Community. This position plays a role in ensuring that Napa community members can identify and understand the dynamics of violence, how to prevent it, and where to get help if they need it, through their leadership and participation in collaborative meetings, partner outreach and education, and other agency-wide initiatives

Specific Programs & Additional Duties

  • Supervise and support Law Enforcement Specialized Unit program, which provides emergency response to DV survivors when reported by the Napa Police Department.
  • Supervise and support Court Advocacy program, including:
    • Provide leadership and oversight to Court Advocacy team on complex case management, crisis intervention, etc.
    • Provide crisis intervention, problem solving, advocacy, information, and referrals specifically in domestic violence court and legal issues.
    • Provide and/or coordinate temporary restraining orders, court accompaniment, advocacy and/or referrals for domestic violence victims residing in the shelter or in the community.
    • Develop and maintain a dynamic working relationship between civil and criminal justice systems, law enforcement agencies, Victim Witness, Family Mediation, Family Court and NEWS.
    • Work cooperatively with staff on case management and planning.
    • Provide emergency and non-emergency transportation to clients as needed.
  • Ability to maintain strict adherence to confidentiality.
  • Oversee and maintain client records and statistics and collect data for monthly and annual reports in line with program requirements.
  • Provide clear written and verbal communication to a variety of stakeholders, including staff, colleagues, and external partners.
  • Attend agency and/or other meetings as directed.
  • Comply with all applicable federal, state and local governmental laws and regulations and agency policies and procedures.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

BA degree from and accredited college and/or applicable work experience.  Experience in case management with supervisory/leadership roles in non-profit work with at-risk communities &/or domestic violence and/or sexual assault related issues preferred. Knowledge of restraining orders and the criminal justice system required. Ability to communicate fluently in writing and orally in English and Spanish. Ability to write, read, analyze, and interpret case management notes and shelter correspondences. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, peers, general public, etc.


Computer Skills, Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Ability to operate Microsoft Word and Excel for a variety of purposes. Ability to create, send, and reply to emails. Ability to use internet search engines. Ability to maintain accurate client records and statistics.
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Counselor Certificate (or successfully attain after hire). Valid California Driver’s License required and current vehicle insurance.

Position Summary

The primary role of this position is to provide the strategic leadership and oversight of communications and donor engagement activities for the organization. This is a key leadership role in the NEWS organization.


Primary Duties

  • Develop and implement comprehensive fund development and marketing/communications plans consisting of goals and strategies for fundraising, including individual, corporate, and foundation outreach, event planning, marketing, communications, and public relations to increase and diversify private support of NEWS.
  • Responsible for agency’s fundraising initiatives, including to plan, coordinate, and implement fundraising, friend-raising, and donor appreciation events. Conducts outreach, engagement, cultivation, and acknowledgement of donors and supporters to build relationships and encourage support of the agency’s mission.
  • Responsible for maintaining and developing organization’s donor management system and acknowledgement requirements and practices.
  • Responsible for messaging and maintaining accurate content on all of NEWS’ communications channels, including website, online payment software, social media, email, and similar. Analyzes trends across multiple channels to improve reach.
  • Actively pitch content to media outlets.
  • Responsible for integrity of agency’s branding requirements and marketing/communications collateral, including brochures, annual impact reports, ads, and similar, for targeted distribution to donors, funders, volunteers, and community partners and members.
  • Responsible for successful implementation of direct mail solicitations including design and layout, organization of mailing lists and appropriate follow up. 
  • Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, including the Fund Development Committee and the Marketing Committee, the Executive Director, and other leadership positions to implement strategies that financially sustain the organization.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Grants and the Director of Finance who are responsible for all federal, state, local, foundation, and community grant applications and reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications

Position Summary

The Shelter Advocate: Overnight and Weekends, manages a variety of emergency domestic violence shelter activities during non-traditional business hours. This position is essential for ensuring adequate staff coverage at the 24 hour emergency shelter.

Primary Duties

  • Share responsibility for overall operations of the shelter and support all shelter clients on weekend and overnight shifts
  • Screen prospective clients for the shelter, conduct intake interviews and assessments, and orient new clients to the shelter
  • Remain on shelter grounds at all times until shelter coverage has been fully assumed by another qualified employee or volunteer
  • Help client’s access available services, make sure clients understand what’s required of them, offer support, assistance, advocacy, education, and counseling to all residents of the shelter as needed
  • Answer helpline calls and provide crisis intervention services to help clients.
  • Transport and advocate for clients, as necessary
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and trainings


Education, Experience & Language Skills

Education in psychology or social work, particularly in trauma or family studies. Experience working with vulnerable and/ or traumatized children. Nonprofit experience a plus. Ability to work independently and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate clearly in writing, orally in English and in Spanish, with strong organizational skills. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, peers, donors, board, general public, etc.
